How fast is “fast”? How big is “big”? Beyond scale and speed, the real challenge is trust: keeping systems stable, detecting fraud without over-automation, and ensuring algorithms remain fair when decisions affect real people. Large-scale platforms that interact with the physical world rarely fail because of missing features — they fail because reality is messy. This talk explores how we operate a real-time data platform across Europe, ingesting hundreds of millions of events per day from dozens of systems, coordinating 19 upstream teams, and supporting hundreds of internal users. We focus on the hard parts: rare failures that become inevitable at scale, unavoidable trade-offs in system and algorithm design, and why human-in-the-loop still matters when algorithms meet the real world.
