Artificial intelligence in video games is quite fascinating. If a character or enemy behaves in a very predictable or strange way, we complain that it is poorly programmed. On the other hand, if we were to face a super-intelligent system like AlphaGo in a match of the ancient board game, it would not be fun unless you were a world-class professional. The challenge, then, lies in designing behaviors that are challenging for players but not impossible to defeat. To achieve this balance, designers must consider all the possible behaviors of each element in the game and anticipate what the player will do. This is where the classic artificial intelligence techniques we will discuss in the talk come into play, enabling us to believe in the virtual worlds we play in.
